‘My husband’s attitude to cancer symptoms cost him his life’

A tragic story about a woman who lost her husband to cancer due to his dismissive attitude towards his symptoms has emerged. Rachael Smith, a 36-year-old biologist from Newcastle, witnessed her husband, Dave Smith, a 58-year-old chemical engineer consultant, pass away at home on May 28 after a three-month cancer battle. Dave was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in February 2024, following years of abdominal pain and bowel changes that he initially ignored, attributing them to aging.

Despite losing a significant amount of weight and being deemed too unwell for chemotherapy, Dave’s condition rapidly deteriorated. His refusal of further treatment led to his passing as Rachael held his hand during his final moments. Rachael hopes that sharing their story will raise awareness about the importance of taking health symptoms seriously, particularly in the case of potentially deadly illnesses like pancreatic cancer.

Pancreatic cancer is a prevalent issue, with over 10,500 UK diagnoses annually, resulting in a high mortality rate within three months, according to Pancreatic Cancer UK. Rachael and Dave’s love story began in 2016 through their mutual passion for horses, with Rachael recalling Dave as someone who rarely fell ill, making his decline all the more shocking.

Changes in Dave’s bowel movements and physical appearance over time raised concerns for Rachael. Despite medical tests yielding a pre-diabetic diagnosis and diverticulitis suspicion, it wasn’t until January 2024, after experiencing extreme pain following a recreational activity, that Dave’s cancer was revealed. The subsequent months were filled with hospital stays and rapid weight loss, leading to his eventual decision to cease treatment and pass away peacefully at home.

Rachael emphasises the importance of advocating for one’s health and recognising seemingly minor symptoms that could indicate a serious underlying issue. She advises individuals to trust their instincts and seek medical attention promptly if any concerning signs arise.

The heartbreaking tale serves as a poignant reminder of the devastating consequences that can result from overlooking health symptoms, underscoring the need for vigilance and proactive healthcare management.
