‘My boyfriend became my girlfriend. We get hate all the time’

A Nottingham TikTok creator, Kai Turner, has shared the transphobic attacks she and her partner face, from being labelled a “gay couple” to claims that “society is doomed.” Kai, 32, and her partner Rob initially met when Kai identified as male. After two years into their relationship, Kai came out as transgender and now identifies as a trans woman. Rob, who was previously straight and has three children from previous relationships, fully supports Kai’s transition.

Despite the challenges they face, including trolls’ comments and public scrutiny, Kai and Rob remain committed to each other. Kai reflects on her upbringing in Leicester, where she was embraced for her uniqueness and had a supportive environment. Discovering transgender figures like Pete Burns and Jeffree Star helped Kai understand her identity, and meeting Rob on Facebook five years ago led to a quick engagement.

Criticism towards Kai and Rob extends even within the LGBTQ+ community, with some questioning their relationship dynamics. Kai, who has been on hormone therapy for three years and is preparing for breast augmentation, emphasises the importance of personal journeys in transgender experiences. In addition to her transition, Kai, an advanced practitioner in aesthetics, performs her own treatments like fillers and Botox.

The couple’s story sheds light on the misconceptions and challenges faced by transgender individuals and their partners. Kai’s experience underscores the need for acceptance and understanding within the LGBTQ+ community. Despite the external judgment and scrutiny, Kai and Rob’s love and resilience continue to shine through, inspiring others to embrace their true selves and find happiness in their personal journeys.
