‘My baby boy was so big people were knocking on my door just so they could see him’

Midwives at Liverpool Women’s Hospital were astounded when Georgia Lamey gave birth to a baby boy described as the “biggest baby they had seen in their career”. Despite initial estimates suggesting the newborn would weigh no more than 10lbs, the scales revealed an astonishing 11lbs 11oz for the baby, equivalent to the weight of a medium-sized bowling ball. Georgia, accompanied by the baby’s father, Joe, found themselves dressing little Jonah in clothes meant for three-month-olds from the beginning, as standard newborn attire was too snug. Their first two children also leaned towards the larger side, weighing around 10lbs each, but Jonah’s size left everyone amazed at his birth.

Georgia, from Netherton, was assured during scans that Jonah was within the “perfect weight” range, neither too large nor too small. However, it was only during her 38-week appointment with the midwife that the possibility of a big baby was raised. Although Georgia had planned for a home birth, a complication led to a hospital delivery as her waters were unclear. Despite a natural birth, the experience was challenging due to shoulder dystocia, causing Jonah to get stuck during delivery.

Describing the moment Jonah was born, Georgia shared that he was so heavy she had to pass him to Joe as she couldn’t hold him any longer. Midwives expressed disbelief at the size of the baby, with the couple needing to dress him in larger clothing right after birth. Georgia recalled people knocking on her door just to catch a glimpse of Jonah, who at 12 weeks old is often mistaken for an eight-month-old due to his size.

As Georgia and Joe await confirmation on whether Jonah holds the record for the largest baby born at the Women’s this year, they reflect on the remarkable experience and the attention their son has garnered in their community. Jonah’s unexpected size has not only surprised the medical staff but also intrigued many who have come to meet the family’s “big bundle of joy.”
