Mum with rare long limbs and hollow face condition talks being called ‘freak’, suicide attempts and wanting to ‘look normal’

A mother from Aberdare, South Wales, has bravely shared her story of living with a rare condition known as Marfan syndrome, which results in unusually long limbs and distinct facial features. Zoe Ridgway, 32, was diagnosed with Marfan syndrome at the age of 12 after being mistakenly thought to have anorexia due to her slender frame. This condition caused Zoe to grow to a height of 6ft (1.83m) with an arm span of 5ft 10in (1.78m), 36-inch legs, and size six feet. Additionally, she suffered from nerve damage that affected her hands, crowded teeth, and a hollow face.

Zoe’s school years were marred by bullying, leading to severe impacts on her mental health, including multiple suicide attempts and struggles with depression. Apart from Marfan syndrome, Zoe also lives with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, which presents challenges such as joint flexibility and delicate skin, making walking challenging for her. Despite feeling isolated due to her conditions, Zoe found comfort and confidence through filler injections to her lips, jaw, and cheekbones starting at the age of 29.
