A tragic accident has claimed the life of Jan Mullen, a 54-year-old mother of two daughters, as she attempted to cross a railway line near the village of Parbold, West Lancashire. The incident occurred around 7:25 pm while Jan was walking her dog off the lead along the foot crossing. Despite the efforts of emergency services, Jan could not be saved and was declared dead at the scene. Trains in that area have a speed limit of 60mph, and the train driver was unable to stop in time to avoid the collision.
During the subsequent inquest at Preston Coroner’s Court, it was revealed that there was no indication that Jan intended to take her own life. The coroner, Kate Bisset, concluded that Jan’s death was most likely a tragic accident, as she stepped onto the tracks shortly after a train had turned a corner. The official verdict was misadventure, which is applied when a death results from unintended consequences of an intentional act.
Jan’s husband, Dr. Daryl Mullen, a partner at Parbold Surgery, expressed his belief that her death was a “simple accident.” He suggested that her impaired vision and possible disorientation in searching for their dog, Fred, may have contributed to the unfortunate event. Following Jan’s passing, tributes poured in for the physiotherapist, with former classmates sharing fond memories on social media.
Parbold Surgery, where Dr. Mullen works, requested privacy for the family and set up a collection box for cards and a condolence book for messages of support. Friends and colleagues remembered Jan as a kind and warm-hearted person, with one classmate recalling her laid-back character and another praising her skills as a hockey team goalie. The community has come together to remember Jan Mullen and offer support to her family during this difficult time.
