Mum’s Cancer-Free Diagnosis Turns into Terminal Prognosis
Michelle Black, a 50-year-old mother from Wheathampstead, Hertfordshire, recently received devastating news that turned her life upside down. Initially told she was cancer-free after beating a rare case of bile duct cancer in November, Michelle’s world came crashing down when doctors discovered a minuscule, inoperable tumour just five days before Christmas. The tumour, less than a millimetre in size, was deemed stage three and terminal. With a prognosis of only two to three years to live, Michelle is now facing an uncertain and challenging battle against the aggressive disease.
Bile duct cancer, also known as cholangiocarcinoma, is a rare and aggressive form of cancer, affecting as few as three in a million people worldwide. Michelle’s journey with this illness began in March 2024 when she started experiencing symptoms like loss of appetite, pain under her ribs, yellow skin, and dark urine. Following surgery to remove 60% of her liver, initial tests showed no signs of cancer. However, a subsequent scan in December 2024 revealed the tiny, elusive tumour near her portal vein.
Michelle’s best friend, Kirstine Cox, has been a pillar of support throughout this ordeal. From the early signs of the illness to the devastating news of the terminal diagnosis, Kirstine has stood by Michelle’s side, offering comfort and encouragement. Despite the grim prognosis, Michelle remains determined to fight the disease and find a cure. Her son Mason, 16, daughter Shannon, 31, and two granddaughters are her driving force, and she refuses to give up without a fight.
The rollercoaster of emotions that Michelle has experienced is evident in her day-to-day life. From the initial relief of being cancer-free to the shock of the terminal diagnosis, she has faced numerous hospital admissions, surgeries, and treatments. Doctors have suggested palliative care and chemotherapy to help manage the disease and offer her more time. Michelle’s resilience and optimism shine through as she navigates the uncertainties of her future, holding onto hope for a miracle cure that will allow her to be there for her loved ones.
Through it all, Michelle’s circle of support continues to grow. Kirstine launched a GoFundMe page to raise funds for alternative treatments and to create lasting memories with Michelle’s family. The outpouring of love and generosity from friends, family, and strangers is a testament to the impact Michelle has had on those around her. As she battles the disease, Michelle’s determination, bravery, and unwavering spirit serve as an inspiration to all who know her.
In the face of unimaginable challenges, Michelle remains steadfast in her fight against cancer. Each day brings new obstacles to overcome, but she tackles them with resilience and hope. As she continues her journey, supported by her loved ones and a community rallying behind her, Michelle’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the strength and courage found in the face of adversity. Together, they are holding onto hope for a future where cancer is conquered, and Michelle can live her life to the fullest once again.
