Mum found in river after week-long search watched show on wild swimming

A mother-of-three, Gaynor Lord, was discovered dead in the River Wensum in Norwich following a week-long search by police. The 55-year-old retail worker had gone missing after leaving work early in Norwich city center on December 8. She had left her clothes and belongings in a park near the river. The coroner, Jacqueline Lake, revealed that Gaynor had recently watched a TV show about cold water swimming and had talked about it with her husband and a friend. The coroner concluded that Gaynor’s death was a result of misadventure, stating that she believed Gaynor intended to enter the water but did not intend to die.

Gaynor’s husband, Clive Lord, mentioned that Gaynor had watched a show about swimming in ice cold water, though she had never done it herself. He speculated that in her confused state, she may have been thinking about this. There were no signs of alcohol or drugs in Gaynor’s system, and there was no evidence of assault. Gaynor’s body was found 2.5 meters underwater, unclothed. The coroner highlighted that Gaynor’s mental health had been noted as stable in January 2023, but there were indications of recent out-of-character behavior.

Analysis of Gaynor’s phone revealed messages indicating distress, including one where she mentioned feeling fear and confusion. The coroner noted that Gaynor had started hormone replacement therapy in March 2023 and had suffered a large epileptic seizure a few days before her disappearance. Her cause of death was determined to be immersion and drowning. Gaynor, who had a previous mental health episode in 2011, had no diagnosis of mental ill health at the time of her death.

The inquest also mentioned that Gaynor’s phone showed she had been looking at pictures of her family and her deceased dog on the afternoon of her disappearance. This tragic incident draws parallels to a previous case where the Lancashire Constabulary was criticized for its handling of a similar search. The coroner extended sympathies to Gaynor’s family, including her daughters, acknowledging the loss they have suffered.

Gaynor Lord’s case serves as a poignant reminder of the complexity of mental health challenges and the impact they can have on individuals and their loved ones. It underscores the importance of recognizing and supporting those who may be experiencing difficulties, as well as the need for continued awareness and understanding surrounding mental health issues.
