More Warnings to Come as People Told ‘Turn Off Gas’ and ‘Prepare Kit’
The Met Office has issued a warning for more heavy rain that could lead to travel disruption and flooding in southern England and south Wales. Here are some key points:
- A yellow warning for rain is in place until midnight, following a similar alert on Thursday.
- Expect heavy rain bringing potential travel disruption and flooding in parts of southern England and southern Wales.
- More warnings are likely to be issued over the weekend.
- Commuters warned of spray, sudden flooding, difficult driving conditions, and possible road closures.
Meteorologist Aidan McGivern stated that rain will continue through Friday into the weekend with varying intensities. After a calm start on Friday, heavier rain is expected, particularly south of the M4. The evening may see clouds moving north with lighter rain. Temperatures could peak at 27C in some areas, potentially the warmest day of the year in western Scotland.
The weekend will remain unsettled, starting dry before rain returns south and showers occur north. Sunday and Monday are forecasted to be cooler with scattered rain. The Environment Agency has introduced flood alerts in England, with surface water flooding possible in some areas until Monday.
The Met Office advises on safety measures in case of flooding:
Check local flood advice for alerts and forecasts.
Charge mobile devices and park cars outside flood zones.
Prepare a flood kit for both home and business.
Store valuables high, turn off gas, water, and electricity.
In the event of being trapped by floodwater:
Go to the highest level in the building.
Avoid attic spaces to prevent being trapped.
Reach the roof only if necessary; call emergency services on 999.
Stay safe and prepared during the expected heavy rainfall and potential flooding in the coming days.
