More than 70 homes to be built on outskirts of Cardiff

Plans for the addition of over 70 new homes to a significant housing development on the outskirts of Cardiff have received approval from the city council. Persimmon Homes announced they have been granted planning permission by Cardiff Council to construct 74 additional homes at The Parish site in Capel Llanilltern. Initially, outline permission for building 1,500 homes on the land south of Creigiau, just north of junction 33 of the M4, was approved in 2018.

Concerns have been raised by residents in Capel Llanilltern regarding flooding issues in the area and the rise in traffic due to new housing projects like the nearby Plasdwr scheme. Despite this, Persimmon Homes’ south east Wales director, Lee Hawker, emphasized that the new development will offer high-quality residences for local families. Hawker expressed the company’s happiness in securing reserved matters planning permission from the council, highlighting their commitment to creating a positive and enduring impact.

The latest phase of the project, named Glan y Coed, will feature four and five-bedroom homes available for purchase on the open market starting in 2025. Alongside the houses, the site will include community sports facilities such as a multi-use games area and a new playground. Hawker stated that they are eager to continue collaborating with Cardiff Council and the local community as they progress with Glan y Coed and the broader Llanilltern Village development to offer quality homes in a sustainable community for residents.

Recent reports from Capel Llanilltern residents have highlighted drainage issues leading to flooding problems and property damage from passing vehicles’ splashes of water. Cardiff Council has informed that remedial actions are being undertaken in Capel Llanilltern, including installing new gullies and conducting clearance work along Star Lane’s culvert. Cllr Norma Mackie, the council’s cabinet member for waste, street scene, and environmental services, stated that work to address the drainage issues would commence during the school summer holidays.

As the housing project progresses, residents and stakeholders will continue to monitor the developments in Capel Llanilltern to ensure the community’s sustainability and well-being.
