New restrictions are set to come into force on Pendyris Street in Cardiff, following concerns about congestion on a nearby side street and drivers ignoring a one-way system. Cardiff Council has decided to extend the one-way system along Pendyris Street after monitoring changes made to the road in 2023. The initial changes involved making the Clare Road junction one way for eastbound traffic, allowing westbound traffic up to Mardy Street. Residents expressed worries that this restriction would lead to increased traffic on Mardy Road to access Clare Road.
After onsite monitoring and engagement with local councillors, the council identified that while the junction was operating well, there were issues with displaced traffic on Mardy Street. This included drivers ignoring restrictions and the one-way system, creating hazards for other road users. As a result, the council has determined that it is best to prevent vehicular traffic from entering Pendyris Street at its junction with Taff Mead Embankment.
The upcoming change will make Pendyris Street entirely one way for eastbound traffic. Small vehicles approaching from Taffs Mead Embankment will have the option to turn around within the junction area, while larger vehicles will need to access Pendyris Street from Clare Road. Cyclists and pedestrians will still be permitted to use the road in both directions. Additionally, the modifications will include a new contraflow cycle lane for cyclists travelling westbound.
These changes will be implemented under an experimental traffic regulation order (ETRO) to trial the new traffic scheme before potentially making it permanent. ETROs must be in place for a minimum of six months but can last up to 18 months. Pay-and-display parking on Pendyris Street will be maintained, with continuing restrictions on right turns from Mardy Street.
The council has yet to announce the exact start date for the ETRO along Pendyris Street. The aim of these new restrictions is to address traffic concerns and improve the overall flow and safety of the road for all users. Residents and commuters are advised to be aware of these forthcoming adjustments and plan their journeys accordingly for a smoother travel experience in the area.
