Millions Warned Over Daily Standing Charges on Prepayment Meters
Households across the UK are facing a financial warning as the seasonal transition out of winter prompts many to switch off their heating. For the four million people on prepayment meters, this shift comes with a financial downside – a daily standing charge that could catch them off guard when they resume heating usage.
Even when energy consumption drops to zero, the energy bill continues accruing due to the daily standing charge, a fixed fee for being connected to the energy grid. These charges accumulate, leading to a debt that consumes a portion of any future credit top-ups, leaving less for actual energy usage. Alex Belsham-Harris, from Citizens Advice, emphasises the importance of keeping the meter topped up, especially during periods of low consumption.
Prepayment meter management can be manageable if potential issues are proactively addressed. Monitoring credit levels, topping up regularly – even with small amounts during low-demand periods, and using dedicated cards or keys for topping up at various locations like Payzone, PayPoint, or Post Office are suggested strategies.
Energy providers offer support for those struggling to keep up with payments. Initiatives such as repayment plans and grant schemes from suppliers like British Gas, EDF, E.ON, and Octopus Energy help alleviate financial burdens for customers. Schemes like the British Gas Energy Trust and the Individuals & Families Fund provide grants of up to £2,000, even for non-customers.
Despite available support, many eligible customers miss out on crucial assistance by not enrolling in the Priority Services Register (PSR). This register offers benefits such as advance power cut notices, free gas safety checks, and tailored support for financially struggling households. Eligible individuals should apply through their energy supplier to access these benefits.
