Millions of drivers ‘in danger’ of costly mistake due to common condition – Wales Online.
Drivers could unknowingly be putting thousands on the line every time they step behind the wheel as the sun starts to set earlier in the day. A survey by car insurance company RAC earlier this year revealed that nine out of 10 drivers find car headlights too bright. With daylight hours starting to get shorter again, experts are warning that more drivers are facing higher chances of dazzling headlights, particularly drivers with astigmatisms.
Astigmatism, a common eye condition estimated to affect 28 million people in the UK, can cause the cornea to be misshapen, impacting how the eye receives light. This can make light sources blurry, warped, streaky, and stretched out, especially at night, posing a hazard to drivers struggling to see the road ahead when faced with bright headlights. While astigmatism is not currently a condition that drivers need to report to the DVLA, its impact on road safety is significant, especially with newer dazzling LED and HID headlights.
Pete Ridley from Car Finance Saver emphasised that even a split second of squinting against these harsh lights could lead to an accident, with potential fines of £1,000 or worse. While praising the efficiency and visibility of newer headlight models, experts urge manufacturers to find a balance to ensure safety for all drivers, including those with astigmatism.
As the risks associated with driving in the dark increase, it is crucial for drivers to be aware of these challenges and take necessary precautions to ensure road safety for themselves and others.
