Met Office warns of 80mph winds and risk of more flooding

The Met Office has issued a warning of 80mph winds and a continued risk of flooding in parts of the UK, including Wales. BBC weather forecaster Derek Brockway highlighted the potential for flooding along coastal areas due to “strong onshore winds and high tides.” Parts of Wales have already experienced 50-80mm of rainfall in the past 36 hours, leading to 10 flood warnings along the River Severn and Monnow.

While Thursday brought dry and bright conditions for most parts, the Met Office is forecasting more unsettled weather over the weekend. Brockway mentioned the likelihood of coastal flooding in the coming days due to the combination of strong winds, high tides, and a full moon. Some areas in the UK could experience gusts of up to 80mph on Sunday, with a specific weather warning in place for parts of north Wales that day.

As Friday begins with a dry start for many, a low-pressure system is expected to bring strong winds to the north and west, potentially impacting coastal areas. Temperatures are expected to remain near normal or slightly above average in the south and east. Moving into the weekend, the Met Office predicts further rain on Saturday followed by a dry end to the day. However, Sunday could see the arrival of a deep low-pressure system from the Atlantic, bringing widespread strong winds, especially in northern and western regions.

RAC Breakdown spokesman Alice Simpson advised caution for drivers, particularly in the north and west of the UK, where strong winds may create hazardous driving conditions. The public is urged to maintain a firm grip on the steering wheel and avoid exposed routes, especially those close to coastal areas prone to high winds and potential flooding.

Met Office officials, including chief meteorologist Jason Kelly and deputy chief meteorologist Tony Wisson, emphasised the uncertainty around the strength and track of the approaching low-pressure system. The weather warnings are expected to be updated based on evolving forecasts, urging people to stay informed about the latest developments.

As the weekend approaches, the risk of disruption due to high winds and heavy rainfall remains high in various parts of the UK. The Met Office advises residents to stay vigilant and be prepared for potential impacts on travel and daily activities.
