Met Office issues third weather warning for Wales covering 71 hours

The Met Office has issued its third weather warning for Wales, covering a total of 71 hours over the weekend and into Monday. As parts of Wales and England are set to be hit by heavy rain, the warning for Monday joins two existing yellow rainfall warnings with slightly different coverage areas. The new warning, effective from midnight until 11.59pm on Monday, follows the forecast for heavy rain and thunderstorms over the weekend, bringing uncertainty over which areas will face the worst downpours.

Weather maps indicate patches of thunderstorms moving across the nation repeatedly over the three days, posing a risk of intense rainfall. The warnings include potential for 30-50mm of rainfall developing in six hours or less in some areas, with some regions possibly experiencing 80-100mm over 12 to 24 hours.

Saturday’s warning covers thunderstorms and heavy showers, with the possibility of intense storms accompanied by hail and lightning. Sunday’s warning extends to potential disruptions from heavy rain, including flooding, difficult driving conditions, temporary road closures, and potential power cuts. Monday’s warning anticipates heavy rain affecting various parts of Wales and England, with the Midlands, northeast England, and east Wales among the areas likely to experience the greatest accumulations.

Most Welsh counties are expected to face heavy rain, with the Met Office warning of the potential for flooded roads, difficult driving conditions, road closures, power cuts, and damage to buildings. The affected counties include Blaenau Gwent, Cardiff, Conwy, Gwynedd, Rhondda Cynon Taf, and more. The Met Office advises residents to stay vigilant and prepare for possible disruptions to transportation and services.

As the warnings remain in place, residents are urged to stay informed about the changing weather conditions and take necessary precautions to ensure safety and minimise potential damages. Stay tuned for further updates and advisories regarding the ongoing weather situation in Wales.
