Alleged corruption at Parc prison in Bridgend is currently under investigation following the discovery of messages exchanged between staff discussing the “excessive use of force on prisoners”, as confirmed by a UK Government minister. The ongoing probe is connected to the recent arrests of four officers at the facility. The corruption, crime, and policing unit of the Prison and Probation Service is collaborating with South Wales Police after uncovering social media messages between staff regarding the alleged misconduct. The prisons minister, Lord James Timpson, highlighted concerns about staff conduct at the prison, which has been embroiled in corruption accusations and has sadly witnessed 17 inmate deaths in just eight months.
Lord Timpson reassured that the investigation is focused on the adult population at the prison and not involving the young offender institution. He mentioned that four prison custody officers have been arrested by South Wales Police on charges of either assault or misconduct in public office. Both G4S and HM Prison and Probation Service are cooperating with the police’s investigations, including suspending G4S staff where necessary.
A spokesperson from South Wales Police disclosed that the four detained officers, a 23-year-old woman from Bridgend, a 45-year-old man from Pontycymer, a 25-year-old man from Merthyr Tydfil, and a 35-year-old man from Llanelli, were arrested on suspicion of assault and misconduct in public office following reports of several incidents at the prison. All four individuals have been released on bail until December to facilitate further investigations.
In a separate development, it was confirmed that a prisoner named Victor Rochester had passed away at Parc prison, marking the 17th inmate death since late February. The tragic incident occurred after a brief illness, and unlike some previous cases, it is not believed to be related to drugs or self-harm. G4S expressed condolences for the loss and emphasised their commitment to eradicating any wrongdoing within the institution.
Lord Timpson underscored that the Prison and Probation Service has a comprehensive strategy for addressing corruption and staff misconduct, noting that the majority of Parc prison’s staff are hardworking and dedicated individuals. Both G4S and the HMPPS reiterated their commitment to supporting the ongoing investigations and ensuring that any necessary actions are promptly taken without compromising the prison’s operational safety.
