A recent study has uncovered a significant gender disparity in online selling, with men earning twice as much as women when it comes to selling clothes and goods on the internet. The disparity in earnings between men and women in online selling can be attributed to the types of items they choose to sell. Men tend to focus on higher-value goods, such as second-hand tech, toys and games, and sports equipment, whereas women predominantly sell second-hand clothes, new clothes, and children’s clothing and shoes.

The study also revealed that the UK is a nation of accidental side hustlers, with over half (56%) of Brits having sold clothes or goods online without considering it a secondary source of income. However, men are more likely to view online selling as a side hustle (57%), with ‘making money’ being their primary motivation, while women often see it as a means of decluttering (65%).

Interestingly, Scotland emerged as the top region for online selling, with sellers in Scotland earning an average of £1,343 per year – nearly double the national average. In contrast, the East Midlands ranked as the worst performing region, with sellers making only £342 per year on average.

Despite the financial opportunities presented by selling online, many sellers lack knowledge in the most cost-effective ways to send items to customers. Only a third of sellers (31%) claim to know the best postage options, highlighting the need for guidance and support in this area.

For individuals looking to maximise their online selling potential, the Post Office offers a range of services to simplify the process. The Post Office’s multi-carrier network allows sellers to choose from carriers like Evri, DPD, Royal Mail, and Parcelforce, while the Parcels Online service enables customers to compare postage options, pay online, and track parcels conveniently.

Candice Ohandjanian, Mails and Parcels Director at the Post Office, expressed excitement about the increasing trend of online selling, emphasising the importance of efficient shipping solutions for sellers. She highlighted the Drop and Go service as a streamlined option for small businesses and side hustlers looking to ship parcels efficiently.

In conclusion, the gender disparity in online selling earnings sheds light on the broader issue of gender equality in the digital marketplace. As more individuals turn to online platforms to supplement their income, it is essential to provide resources and support to help sellers navigate the complexities of e-commerce effectively.
