CCTV footage has been released of the moments leading up to a brutal attack near a Welsh pub leading to the death of a 32-year-old man. In the early hours of September 9, 2023, Daniel Bradley was walking down a lane near the Brogden pub in New Road, Porthcawl, when he was assaulted twice by Steven Chappell. The footage shows Chappell and Bradley leaving the pub and walking down a lane, with Chappell seen delivering kicks and punches to Bradley as he lay on the floor.
Bradley was taken to the hospital on September 11 and later discharged before an ambulance was called to his house on September 15. He had contracted sepsis and eventually died in the hospital on September 23 with his family present. Chappell, described as a man with a long history of violence by Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke, was sentenced to 14 years in custody and an extended licence period of two years for the attack.
During the trial, the CCTV footage played to the court revealed the vicious attack despite Chappell wearing a surgical boot on his right foot. Chappell punched and kicked Bradley while he was defenceless on the floor, even returning to the scene after walking away. The judge noted Chappell’s deliberate actions in the attack, mentioning his previous convictions for violence and being under the influence of alcohol and drugs during the incident.
Chappell was handed an extended sentence of 16 years, with him required to serve at least two-thirds of the custodial term before being considered for release. The judge highlighted the persistent violence displayed by Chappell, describing the attack as a vicious and relentless act towards a vulnerable victim. The incident has sparked conversations about violence and safety, urging the community to remain vigilant and report any concerning behaviour to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
