Manipulative man lured victim to a secluded area – the judge said what he did next was a ‘sexual mauling’

Grant Young, 33, was found guilty of sexual assault after a trial at Cardiff Crown Court, where the judge described his actions as a ‘sexual mauling’. The court heard that Young, a man described as “controlling, manipulative and physically abusive”, lured the victim to a secluded area where he subjected her to the assault. The victim, who expressed feeling “helpless” and now requires medication, detailed the trauma she has endured since the incident.

During the assault, Young pinned down the victim and attempted to kiss and hug her, leaving her in a state of fear and vulnerability. The sentencing hearing revealed that Young was heavily intoxicated during the attack and displayed aggressive behaviour, including throwing a bottle. Judge Simon Mills Esq remarked that Young’s actions were manipulative and that the victim was scared of him.

In a harrowing victim personal statement read in court, the woman shared the ongoing impact of the assault on her mental and physical well-being. She described experiencing anxiety, sleep disturbances, and PTSD-related symptoms, including tremors and panic attacks. The victim expressed feeling constantly on edge and helpless, with the abuse still affecting her daily life.

Young, with a history of 32 previous convictions related to violence and drugs, was reprimanded by Judge Mills for his dismissive behaviour in court. Despite not committing the most severe sexual offence, the judge condemned Young’s controlling and manipulative tendencies towards women. Young received a one-year prison sentence, along with a 10-year restraining order and sex offender notification requirements.

Judge Mills concluded by addressing Young’s deceitful nature and quick temper, highlighting his lack of empathy and propensity for abusive behaviour. The court’s decision aimed to hold Young accountable for his actions and protect the victim from further harm. Young’s sentencing serves as a warning against coercive and harmful behaviours, emphasizing the importance of justice and accountability in cases of sexual assault.
