A frightening incident occurred in Swansea when a man, identified as Jamie Knox, grabbed a stranger in the street and threatened to “choke and slice” him unless he handed over his cash and bank card. Swansea Crown Court heard that Knox, who was riding a gold-coloured mountain bike, approached the victim on High Street near the former White Swans pub. The victim, who was walking, engaged in conversation with Knox and eventually withdrew £20 from a cash machine to buy food. Subsequently, Knox grabbed the victim, threatened him, and demanded money and the bank card.
The victim managed to break free and ran towards The Kingsway, with Knox chasing him on his bike before eventually fleeing the scene. Police later found Knox with incriminating evidence on Wind Street, leading to his arrest. Knox, of McRitchie Place, Gendros, Swansea, pleaded guilty to robbery and other theft offences. The court revealed his extensive criminal history, including previous convictions for violence, drug supply conspiracy, and possession of a bladed article.
Despite Knox’s guilty plea, Judge Paul Hobson sentenced him to four years in prison for the robbery, as well as additional time for the shoplifting offences and an activated suspended sentence. The judge emphasized the terrifying nature of the incident and considered Knox’s prior suspended sentence an aggravating factor. Knox’s defence mentioned his participation in educational courses and an addiction programme during his remand in HMP Cardiff.
The court’s decision highlighted the seriousness of Knox’s actions and their impact on the victim. Knox’s criminal past and the violent nature of the robbery underscored the need for a significant prison sentence. This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by individuals engaging in violent crime and the importance of holding them accountable for their actions.
