Man discovered dead in garden after being attacked by ‘up to four dogs’
A tragic incident unfolded in Rednal near Birmingham, where Nicholas Glass, 33, was found dead in a garden after being savagely attacked by multiple dogs. It was reported that Glass visited his relative’s property on Hereford Close to feed his brother’s dogs while his brother was hospitalised. The dogs involved in the attack were described as two XL bullies, along with an American bulldog and a Staffordshire crossbreed.
Witnesses revealed that Glass was last seen alive entering the property on the evening of August 19, accompanied by one of his brother’s dogs. Disturbingly, CCTV footage captured sounds of dogs yelping, followed by faint cries for help later in the night. Police were alerted to loose dogs in the area on August 21, leading to the discovery of Glass hiding behind a fence panel in the garden, with severe injuries sustained from the attack.
The inquest, held at Birmingham Coroner’s Court, shed light on the harrowing details of Glass’s injuries, which included multiple blunt force traumas caused by dog bites and claws. Tragically, his injuries proved fatal, resulting in his untimely death. Despite the efforts of law enforcement to locate and detain the dogs involved, it was challenging to ascertain which dogs specifically had attacked Glass due to the nature of the incident.
Detective Constable Darren Ford, who testified at the inquest, emphasised that the dogs discovered at the scene were not overtly aggressive, prompting a cautious response from officers. Along with the physical evidence at the scene, including blood within the property and indications of a struggle, the investigation pointed towards a fatal dog attack as the cause of Glass’s death.
Assistant coroner Adam Hodson acknowledged the complexities of the case and the tragic loss of Glass, who was described as a caring family member despite struggles with his mental health. Hodson offered his condolences to Glass’s grieving family, acknowledging the profound impact of the incident on their lives. The inquest concluded with a narrative verdict, highlighting the absence of foul play in Glass’s demise.
