Man’s Death Linked to Drug Use Three Years After Fatal Crash
A tragic event unfolded over the course of several years, ultimately resulting in the death of Delme Ceri Thomas. The series of events began in December 2020 when Mr. Thomas was involved in a traumatic crash that claimed the life of his friend, Jeff Rawle. The incident occurred on Rhigos Road in Treherbert, where a collision between a Mazda driven by Rawle and an ambulance left Rawle dead at the scene. Mr. Thomas, on the other hand, suffered life-threatening injuries and had to undergo multiple operations, including a hip replacement and spinal surgery. Despite his physical recovery, Mr. Thomas struggled with mental health issues in the years following the crash.
According to the Pontypridd coroner’s court, Mr. Thomas had been referred to drug and alcohol services due to his substance abuse but had not engaged with the support available to him. Tragically, on January 8 last year, Mr. Thomas was found dead at his home in Treherbert. The post-mortem examination revealed that he had bronchopneumonia and had ingested bromazolam, a powerful sedative classified as a Class C drug. The coroner, Patricia Morgan, concluded that Mr. Thomas died of natural causes aggravated by his drug use.
In a separate inquest related to the death of Jeff Rawle, it was revealed that he had been driving at excessive speed in wet conditions before losing control of the vehicle and colliding with the ambulance. Mr. Rawle, who had experienced trauma prior to the accident after discovering a loved one’s body, had alcohol, amphetamine, and etizolam in his system at the time of the crash. Assistant coroner Gaynor Kynaston recorded Mr. Rawle’s death as a result of a road traffic collision, with the acknowledgment that drugs found in his system may have contributed to the outcome.
The inquest proceedings shed light on the significant impact of substance abuse and trauma on individuals’ lives, highlighting the importance of seeking help and support during challenging times. The coroners emphasised the role of inquest reports in uncovering the circumstances surrounding deaths and potentially preventing similar tragedies in the future. By attending and reporting on inquests, journalists uphold the principles of open justice and facilitate discussions on critical issues such as mental health and substance abuse.
