A tragic incident unfolded in Gwersyllt, Wrexham, as a man was found guilty of murdering his vulnerable flatmate in a sustained and brutal attack. Matthew Hardy, aged 37, stood accused of killing his flatmate, Antony Gerald Derwent, 52. The incident took place at their residence on Wheat Close on April 7, 2024. During the verdict delivery at Mold Crown Court, Hardy, dressed in a white shirt, dark tie, and trousers, displayed no emotion on Monday (March 24).
Prosecutors presented the jury with a compelling case, suggesting that Hardy, under the influence of alcohol, became enraged and violently assaulted Mr. Derwent in the early hours of the fateful day. The horrifying attack left Mr. Derwent, affectionately known as ‘Diddy’, with a fractured skull, plunging him into a coma. Following the assault, Hardy sent messages to Nathan Kendrick and Callum Jones in an attempt to fabricate an alibi, going as far as inventing a non-existent person named Shaun or Shane.
The court discovered that the imprint of the laces on the victim’s face corresponded to the design found on Hardy’s trainers at their shared flat in Wheat Close. Furthermore, Hardy misled Mr. Jones and Mr. Kendrick regarding his whereabouts, deepening suspicions of his involvement. In a surprising turn, the defence, led by Owen Edwards, raised the possibility of a third person’s presence at the scene, suggesting that similar shoe marks on the victim’s face could have been caused by someone else.
