Man jailed for assaulting partner with scaffolding pole and strangling her

Barry Jones, a 44-year-old man from Caernarfon, has been sentenced to 25 months in jail for assault causing actual bodily harm and an additional 17 months for intentional strangulation. The incidents occurred when Jones attacked his partner, hitting her with a scaffolding pole and strangling her. Mold Crown Court heard that the woman, who felt lonely and isolated after moving to north Wales, was first attacked last summer when Jones accused her of theft.

During the attack, Jones punched the victim in the chest and struck her with a metal pole, causing her injuries that made it hard for her to walk and left her bleeding. Following the assault, Jones prevented her from leaving the home by obstructing the bedroom door. A second incident occurred in March of this year, where Jones again made accusations against the woman and physically assaulted her by grabbing and squeezing her neck.

The following day, the woman sought refuge at a friend’s flat, but Jones followed her there, continuing to harass and threaten her. Fearing for her safety, she hid behind a sofa until the police were called and Jones was arrested. The victim, in a statement, revealed the lasting impact of the assaults, including the development of epileptic fits, financial struggles, and the need to relocate.

Jones’s defence attorney, Anna Price, stated that Jones is remorseful and cited his history of health issues, including a heart attack three years ago and ongoing treatment for schizophrenia. The judge, His Honour Rhys Rowlands, imposed the prison sentences and issued a ten-year restraining order preventing Jones from contacting his victim.

The incidents underscore the seriousness of domestic violence and its long-lasting effects on victims. It serves as a reminder of the importance of raising awareness about such issues and providing support to those affected. The court’s decision to hold Jones accountable for his actions sends a strong message that violence against women will not be tolerated in society.
