Major parking change at one of Wales’ most popular attractions

A significant change in parking arrangements has been introduced at one of Wales’ most popular attractions, Yr Wyddfa, also known as Snowdon. The Pen-y-Pass car park, which has 66 spaces, has implemented a new booking-only system starting from April 5th. This means that drivers will no longer have the option to simply turn up and pay on the spot for parking. Instead, they are required to pre-book their parking space via the JustPark app. This change will be effective until November.

Pen-y-Pass serves as the access point to the Miners’ and Pyg Track trailheads that lead to the summit of Yr Wyddfa. The rates for parking at the car park have been listed on the JustPark app as £20 for up to eight hours, £30 for eight to 12 hours, and £40 for a full day of parking. The introduction of the booking-only system aims to manage the high demand for parking at this popular location and provide a more organised parking experience for visitors.

John Williams, a car park assistant at Pen-y-Pass, highlighted the need for visitors to adjust to the new system. He mentioned that pre-booking parking spaces through the JustPark app is now essential. In cases where parking spaces are unavailable at Pen-y-Pass, alternative transportation options such as Sherpa buses from Bangor, Caernarfon, Betws-y-Coed, and Porthmadog are available. Additionally, there is a park and ride service from Nant Peris, located three miles away towards Llanberis, which offers convenient access to the car park.

Visitors also have the option to park in other nearby locations such as Pen y Gwryd, where pay and display laybys are available. Parking in Llanberis is another alternative, providing a different route to ascend to the summit of Yr Wyddfa. These parking alternatives offer flexibility to visitors and ensure that they can still access the mountain even if spaces at Pen-y-Pass are fully booked.

The booking-only system at Pen-y-Pass is aimed at enhancing the visitor experience and managing parking congestion at this popular attraction. By requiring drivers to pre-book their parking spaces, the new system aims to provide a more streamlined and organised approach to parking allocation. This change is part of ongoing efforts to improve visitor access and safety at Yr Wyddfa, ensuring a positive experience for all individuals visiting the iconic Welsh mountain.

The implementation of the booking-only system at Pen-y-Pass marks a significant shift in how parking is managed at one of Wales’ most renowned natural landmarks. Visitors are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the new system and make advance bookings to secure their parking spaces when planning their trips to Yr Wyddfa. By adhering to these new guidelines, visitors can contribute to a smoother and more efficient parking process, ultimately benefiting their overall experience at this popular Welsh attraction.
