Major A470 Roadworks Postponed After Fatal Train Crash in Powys
Major roadworks planned for the A470 in Wales have been postponed following a tragic train crash that resulted in a passenger’s death earlier this week. The incident involved two trains colliding near Llanbrynmair, Powys, on Monday night, leading to the death of Tudor Evans and hospitalisation of 15 others. An investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the crash.
One area of the A470 at Talerddig has been closed since the train crash, and roadworks that were set to commence next week have been deferred until the New Year, as announced by the Welsh Government. The initial plan was to start roadworks between Talerddig and Dolfach on October 31, aiming to address a stretch of road that has experienced traffic management since an emergency closure in October 2023 due to a partial collapse of a retaining wall.
Prior to the crash, the Welsh Government had outlined roadworks on the A470 running from October through February to implement a lasting solution for the affected road section. The decision to postpone the roadworks came after a review prompted by the rail incident. The Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales, Ken Skates, expressed condolences for the incident and highlighted the importance of allowing the community time to process the events before resuming roadworks.
As of now, no specific date has been provided for when the roadworks will recommence. In the meantime, traffic lights will continue to regulate traffic flow on the road, with one lane remaining closed. Ongoing monitoring will ensure the road’s safety during this period. The section of the A470 between the Llangurig turn off and Tan Y Castell at Carno has been shut since the crash and remains closed as of Friday morning.
The decision to postpone the roadworks aims to show respect for the recent tragedy and prioritise the community’s well-being during this difficult time. Updates regarding a revised timeline for the roadworks will be communicated in due course.
The Welsh Government’s thoughtful approach in delaying the roadworks underscores the importance of sensitivity and care towards those affected by the recent train crash. By prioritising community needs and emotions, they aim to navigate this challenging situation with compassion and understanding.
