A lorry has plunged more than 60 feet from a bridge on the M6 in Cheshire, according to a report by Cheshire Constabulary. The incident occurred on the Thelwall Viaduct between junctions 20 and 21, with the vehicle landing on the embankment below. Fortunately, the driver of the lorry is reported to have escaped life-threatening injuries. The dramatic event unfolded around 6.50 pm on Monday.
Emergency services swiftly responded to the scene, with fire crews employing rescue equipment to reach the driver. Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service also worked to cool the lorry using water and managed to prevent a potential fuel leak of approximately 1,000 litres. Due to the damage sustained by the barrier, three lanes on the northbound carriageway are expected to remain closed overnight. However, one lane will be open with a reduced speed limit in place.
In light of the aftermath, authorities have advised motorists to steer clear of the vicinity to avoid further disruption. Despite the gravity of the situation, there is a sense of relief that the driver escaped severe harm in what could have been a far more tragic incident.
This occurrence serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by drivers traversing busy motorway bridges and highlights the invaluable work carried out by emergency services in responding to such emergencies promptly. The quick and efficient actions taken by firefighters undoubtedly played a crucial role in averting a more catastrophic outcome. As investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the lorry’s fall, measures are being implemented to ensure the safety and security of all road users in the area.
