Legendary Welsh music, stage, and screen entertainer Dewi ‘Pws’ Morris has passed away at the age of 76, after a period of illness. Dewi ‘Pws’, as he was affectionately known, was a multi-talented actor, musician, and writer who made a significant impact on Welsh TV and music. He was best recognized for his work in Welsh language music, acting, and writing.
Born Dewi Gray Morris in 1948, he hailed from Swansea and attended Lon Las primary school and Dinefwr Grammar School. Initially trained as a teacher at Coleg Cyncoed, Dewi ventured into acting and became a full-time member of Cwmni Theatr Cymru. He was a prominent figure in Welsh TV, starring in iconic productions like the 1978 rugby film Grand Slam, soap opera Pobol y Cwm, and ‘Rownd a Rownd’.
Dewi was celebrated for his musical contributions too, having been a member of Edward H. Dafis, a renowned Welsh language rock band, and winning the Song for Wales competition in 1971. His literary works included books like ‘Popeth Pws’, ‘Humor Pws’, and ‘Oops’, showcasing his diverse talents.
In addition to his entertainment career, Dewi was actively involved in Welsh language campaigns and was honoured with awards such as Best Regional Presenter by the Royal Television Society. He also served as the Children’s Poet for Wales and was recognised with an honorary degree from Swansea University in 2018.
In recent years, he resided in Nefyn, Gwynedd, with his widow Rhiannon. Dewi ‘Pws’ Morris left behind a rich legacy in Welsh entertainment and music, having touched the lives of many with his talent and charisma. His contributions to Welsh culture and arts will be fondly remembered by generations to come.
