Legendary Premier League Referee Left Paralysed and in Wheelchair After Rare Diagnosis
Legendary former Premier League referee Uriah Rennie is facing a new challenge as he learns to walk again after being left paralysed from the waist down due to a rare condition. The 65-year-old, known for being the league’s first black referee and officiating over 300 top-flight matches before retiring in 2008, recently disclosed that he was diagnosed with an inoperable neurological condition following severe back pain while on holiday in Turkey last year.
During an interview with BBC News, Rennie shared his experience of being wheelchair-bound after spending several months in the hospital. He described the process of “retraining” his legs as he fights to regain mobility. Rennie recounted his time in the hospital, saying, “I spent a month laid on my back and another four months sitting in bed. They kept me in the hospital until February, they found a nodule pushing on my spine, and it was a rare neurological condition so it’s not something they can operate on.”
Despite the challenges he faces, Rennie remains determined and focused on his recovery. He expressed gratitude for the support of his family, friends, the hospital staff, and Sheffield Hallam University, where he was due to start a new job as chancellor. Rennie continued to work from his hospital bed, directing community sports teams and striving to make a difference in Sheffield even amidst his health struggles.
Having been awarded an honorary doctorate at the university in November 2023 for his community work, Rennie’s dedication to serving others remains unwavering. The former referee’s resilience shines through as he works towards his goal of walking again, emphasizing, “I want to be able to say I did everything I could to try.” His positive outlook and determination serve as an inspiration to many as he navigates this new chapter in his life.
