Neil Gaiman and Amanda Palmer Face Civil Lawsuits for Sexual Assault
Neil Gaiman, a revered British author, and his wife, Amanda Palmer, are currently embroiled in legal battles in the United States. The lawsuits, filed in Wisconsin, Massachusetts, and New York, accuse Gaiman of sexually assaulting a woman. This woman alleges that the assaults began when she was befriended by Palmer at the age of 22 while she was homeless in New Zealand and subsequently started working for the couple. Shockingly, the woman claims that Palmer informed her of previous complaints filed by over a dozen different women regarding similar incidents. The lawsuits further accuse the couple of violating federal human trafficking laws, with allegations including assault, battery, inflicting emotional distress against Gaiman, and negligence against Palmer. The plaintiff is seeking damages amounting to at least seven million dollars (£5.6 million).
Furthermore, it came to light during a Tortoise Media podcast series in the summer of 2024 that five women, four of whom were featured in a New York Magazine article earlier that year, made similar allegations against Gaiman. Subsequently, Dark Horse Comics opted to cancel upcoming projects involving Gaiman, and a UK stage adaptation of his book Coraline was also scrapped. In response, Gaiman vehemently denied the allegations through a blog post where he expressed dismay at the severity of the accusations. The acclaimed author acknowledged the complexity of the situation, stating, “I’m far from a perfect person, but I have never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity with anyone.
