Jury inquest to be held into death of woman who died after marshmallow game

An upcoming jury inquest will delve into the tragic death of a woman who passed away after participating in a marshmallow game. The incident took place at Beddau RFC, where 37-year-old Natalie Buss from Church Village in Rhondda Cynon Taf lost her life. Mrs. Buss tragically choked while engaged in a competition to see who could fit the most marshmallows in their mouth on October 7 last year.

After Mrs. Buss left the stage following the marshmallow challenge, she collapsed in a corridor area and began choking. Despite CPR efforts by bystanders and paramedics, she could not be revived and passed away at the scene. A pre-inquest review hearing revealed that Christopher Gibbons had been hired by Beddau RFC to provide entertainment for a fundraising evening that night. Mr. Gibbons, described as an “established entertainer,” has reportedly ceased including the game in his performances following the tragic incident.

Coroner Gavin Knox disclosed that the inquest will focus on risk assessment, risk mitigation, the circumstances of the game, and the cause of Mrs. Buss’ death. He emphasised the importance of a jury for the inquest, as mandated by suspicions of a potential “notifiable accident” resulting in death. This type of inquest is typically prompted by incidents deemed suspicious, contentious, or with broader implications for the public.

Due to a backlog in jury inquests exacerbated by the pandemic, Mr. Knox informed Mrs. Buss’ family that a full inquest could not be organised for at least six months. The proceedings will involve testimonies from Mrs. Buss’ husband, Mr. Gibbons, attending paramedics, and her GP. Floral tributes were left at Beddau RFC following the tragic loss, with the club expressing profound sorrow and extending heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Buss’ family and loved ones.

The inquest seeks to shed light on the circumstances surrounding Mrs. Buss’ untimely passing, offering an opportunity for a thorough examination of the events leading to her death. The community at Beddau RFC and beyond mourns the loss of a cherished individual, highlighting the profound impact of the tragedy. The inquest aims to provide clarity and closure for all affected by this devastating incident as it prepares to convene next year.
