Judge Leads Tributes to Huw Evans, Brother of Strictly’s Wynne Evans
Tributes have flooded in for the late barrister Huw Evans, following his passing last week. Huw, a highly respected legal professional, garnered recognition for his involvement in a significant case in the Caribbean. Notably, Huw was the brother of the famous radio presenter and Strictly Come Dancing star, Wynne Evans. In a poignant gathering at Cardiff Crown Court, judges and barristers from across Wales and beyond came together to honour Huw, who tragically succumbed to an illness he had concealed from his peers.
As the eulogy took place, Judge Lucy Crowther led the heartfelt tributes to Huw, shedding light on his beginnings in Carmarthen on August 26, 1962. Born to Elizabeth and David Evans, Huw was the eldest son in a family that later saw his brothers, Wynne and Mark Evans, achieve international acclaim as opera singers. Notably, their mother Elizabeth’s efforts to save The Lyric cinema in Carmarthen were immortalized in the film “Save The Cinema,” with Samantha Morton portraying her role. Huw’s early life saw him excel as a dancer before embarking on a Navy career that ultimately steered him towards the legal profession.
After completing his training in Swansea, Huw commenced his legal practice in Cardiff in 1989, initially at 32 Park Place before transitioning to 30 Park Place in 2005. His legal endeavours often involved intricate fraud cases, notably a prolonged litigation in the Turks and Caicos Islands implicating a former premier and cabinet members on charges of fraud, bribery, and corruption. Huw’s personal life flourished as well; he wed Donna in 1990, and together they raised two sons, Louis and Emile, and welcomed two granddaughters into their family.
Tragedy struck during their time in the Caribbean in 2017 when Hurricane Irma ravaged their home as Huw and his family sought shelter. Despite the harrowing experience, Huw’s resilient spirit shone through. Described by Judge Crowther as a dependable and trustworthy friend, Huw’s genuine care for his colleagues and passion for rugby, skiing, and luxury cars endeared him to many. Colleagues, including Caroline Rees KC and former pupil Sharon Bahia, lauded Huw’s unwavering support and familial treatment towards them.
Wynne Evans, who attended the proceedings remotely, paid a poignant tribute to his brother and shared heartfelt memories on social media. Expressing profound sorrow at the loss of his elder sibling, Wynne hailed Huw as his hero and a lifelong inspiration. The bond between the brothers transcended their individual successes, reflecting a deep-rooted connection that time nor distance could sever. In the wake of Huw’s passing, the legal community mourns the loss of a dedicated professional and a cherished friend.
In these challenging times, the legal fraternity stands united in honouring the memory of Huw Evans, a beacon of integrity and camaraderie. His legacy as a legal luminary and a compassionate soul lives on in the hearts of those who knew and cherished him. As the legal community navigates this somber moment, the outpouring of tributes serves as a testament to the profound impact Huw had on all who had the privilege of his friendship.
