Johnny Marr, the former guitarist and co-songwriter of The Smiths, has revealed that he turned down the opportunity for a reunion tour with the iconic band. Marr stated that he took action to safeguard the band’s legacy amidst a trademark dispute, refuting claims made by The Smiths’ frontman, Morrissey. In a statement released through his management team, Marr, 60, expressed that he intervened to prevent third parties from exploiting the band’s name and to ensure the protection of its heritage. He clarified, “To prevent third parties from profiting from the band’s name, it was left to me to protect the legacy.”
Addressing Morrissey’s assertions, Marr emphasised that he declined the offer for a reunion tour, contrary to claims made by the band’s lead singer. The dispute arose following allegations that Marr had independently obtained full trademark rights without consultation. Marr’s management team clarified that in 2018, upon discovering that the band did not own the trademark, Marr reached out to Morrissey to collaborate in safeguarding The Smiths’ name. However, receiving no response, Marr proceeded to secure the trademark himself. Subsequently, an agreement was reached with Morrissey’s legal team, and Marr signed an assignment of joint ownership to Morrissey as a goodwill gesture in January 2024.
Marr dismissed rumours of an upcoming tour featuring a different frontman for The Smiths, asserting, “There are no such plans.” Additionally, he disclosed that he rejected an offer to compile another greatest hits album with Warner Music Group due to the existence of numerous compilations already available. The Manchester-based band, formed in the 1980s, garnered widespread acclaim for hits like “Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now,” “This Charming Man,” and “There Is A Light That Never Goes Out” before disbanding in 1987.
The ongoing trademark dispute and conflicting statements from Marr and Morrissey have reignited interest among fans and industry insiders. Marr’s commitment to upholding The Smiths’ name and music legacy underscores his dedication to preserving the band’s iconic status in the annals of music history. As The Smiths’ fans await further developments, Marr’s decisive actions in defending the band’s heritage highlight his unwavering allegiance to the band and its musical contributions.
