Jet ski riders left adrift near Welsh beach

Two individuals were left adrift for several hours off the Gwynedd coast after their jet ski encountered mechanical issues, leading to a rescue mission by the Abersoch RNLI. The jet ski was seen drifting towards Criccieth Castle from Black Rock Sands beach in Morfa Bychan, a significant distance from the shoreline but still visible from land. The Abersoch RNLI promptly launched their inshore lifeboat after being alerted and collaborated with a coastguard team to locate and rescue the stranded pair. Despite both individuals seeming medically stable, they showed signs of cold exposure after being adrift for an extended period due to challenging tide and wind conditions. Once safely back on land, they were handed over to a local coastguard team for further assistance.

Volunteer helm at Abersoch RNLI, Andy Gunby, highlighted the importance of wearing proper personal protective equipment, emphasising the necessity of life jackets for water activities. Gunby urged individuals to ensure they have a means of calling for help in case of emergencies and advised against delaying seeking assistance, entering the water, or abandoning the vessel. Visibility and safety are compromised when individuals are separated from their crafts in the water. The incident occurred on the evening of Saturday, September 21, serving as a reminder of the significance of taking necessary precautions during water activities to prevent similar situations.

The rescue operation was successfully carried out by the Abersoch RNLI team, demonstrating their swift response and expertise in handling maritime emergencies. The incident underscores the unpredictable nature of water sports and the importance of preparedness and safety measures to prevent accidents and ensure timely assistance in distress situations. As the rescued individuals recuperate from their ordeal, the incident serves as a cautionary tale for water sports enthusiasts to prioritise safety and adhere to best practices while engaging in recreational activities on the water.

The Abersoch RNLI’s prompt action in rescuing the drifting jet ski riders highlights the critical role of emergency response teams in ensuring the safety of water sports participants and the significance of adhering to safety protocols to prevent potentially life-threatening situations. The collaborative efforts of the RNLI and coastguard teams in swiftly locating and rescuing the stranded individuals exemplify the dedication and professionalism of maritime rescue services in safeguarding lives at sea.
