Jenrick video ‘upsetting’ as it uses footage of dead soldier

Tom Tugendhat, a contender for the Tory leadership, has expressed his distress over a campaign video produced by his rival, Robert Jenrick, that features footage of a soldier who served with Tugendhat in Afghanistan and has since passed away. The upcoming Conservative leadership candidates are gearing up for their final opportunity to address the party’s conference as they vie to become the successor to Rishi Sunak.

Despite the focus shifting towards the conference, Jenrick faces continued criticism from his competitors for statements made in the video, where he suggests that UK special forces were prioritising killing rather than capturing terrorists due to concerns about human rights law. Tugendhat voiced his concerns on BBC Newsnight, highlighting the insensitivity of using footage of individuals, including those no longer alive, in such contexts.

Tugendhat’s admonishment extended to cautioning Jenrick against discussing military matters without expertise, particularly noting the sensitivity and gravity of such discussions. All four contenders are scheduled to deliver speeches on the main conference stage before party members, with the leadership contest taking centre stage at the four-day event following the party’s electoral defeat in July.

Jenrick, seen as the frontrunner in the race, is expected to advocate for a “new Conservative Party” in his address, emphasising the need to address substantial challenges. His counterparts, including Tugendhat, will outline their visions for revitalising the party, exploring aspects such as economic policies and wealth creation. The contest will culminate in the selection of two finalists by the parliamentary party next week, leading to the ultimate decision by the membership on November 2.

In a separate development, Nigel Farage of Reform UK has declared his intention not to collaborate with the future Tory leader, citing the party’s damaged reputation and his aspirations to replace them with his own party. The leadership race intensifies as candidates strive to secure the support and confidence of party members during this critical juncture.
