‘Irate’ man threatened to shoot armed police officers from his window and pelted them with cans

A man in Caldicot, Wales, Nathan Leatherland, 32, caused a stir when he threatened to shoot police officers and claimed to have bullets, as per WalesOnline. The incident led to negotiators being called in as Leatherland refused to engage with authorities, pelting them with cans and other objects. Police were alerted after he was observed making threats outside his residence on January 4.

During the escalation of events, Leatherland displayed aggressive behavior towards officers, causing neighbours to evacuate their houses and a police cordon to be established. He conveyed intentions to shoot officers from his window, boasting about his supposed military training and possession of nine bullets. Negotiators attempted to communicate with Leatherland, but he continued to be uncooperative, resorting to throwing items at the police.

Following a series of confrontations, officers entered his home and took him into custody after he began harming himself. During transport to the hospital, Leatherland further exhibited disruptive behavior by urinating in the police van. In a separate incident at HMP Cardiff, he assaulted a fellow inmate by pouring boiling water on them. Leatherland, acknowledging his actions in court, pleaded guilty to several charges, including affray and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Representing himself, Leatherland attributed his behavior to mental health struggles and a past financial issue, expressing remorse for his actions. Judge Shoman Khan highlighted the gravity of the situation, emphasizing the fear and violence provoked by Leatherland’s actions. Ultimately, Leatherland received a 14-month prison sentence for his offences.
