An inspiring and innovative campaign has been launched to promote a brighter and more hopeful future for communities in the UK. The Joseph Rowntree Foundation’s ‘Seeds of Hope’ initiative aims to celebrate communities across the country that are challenging fatalism and addressing issues such as mental health and food security through community growing projects.
The campaign was officially launched in London by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and change maker Tayshan Hayden-Smith. The event highlighted the positive impact that community growing and nature connection can have in inspiring hope and fostering a sense of community resilience. This initiative is particularly important as it addresses challenges that disproportionately affect vulnerable individuals in society.
Research accompanying the campaign revealed that there is a widespread sense of anxiety about the future among UK adults. However, there is also a strong belief in the power of green spaces to instill hope and positivity. The findings showed that only seven percent of adults feel more supported by the government than by their local communities, with a significant portion expressing a preference for community support, especially among younger generations.
The ‘Seeds of Hope’ campaign showcases community-led events taking place across the UK, from Inverness to Hastings, Liverpool, Derby, Powys, Bristol, and beyond. These events aim to promote community engagement and address issues such as mental wellbeing, climate change, and food security through initiatives like community gardening projects.
The campaign has also highlighted a growing demand for investment in green spaces, with 61% of UK adults expressing a desire to see more local initiatives focused on environmental and mental wellbeing. Especially noteworthy is the willingness of 31% of adults to participate in community gardening projects to grow their own food, with a majority of them also interested in addressing societal issues such as climate change and food security.
Some of the upcoming events include Re: Imagine Derby, Equinox Weekender in Liverpool, Grow & Gather in North Yorkshire, Save Soanes in London, Hopeful Highlands in Inverness, and We Are A Sea in Hastings. These events aim to bring communities together, foster a sense of belonging, and create spaces for positive change and growth.
