Multiple Train Collision in Odisha, India Claims Lives and Injures Hundreds
Local officials have reported that a multiple train collision in India’s eastern Odisha state has resulted in the deaths of at least 50 people, with hundreds more injured. The incident took place in Balasore district, and numerous ambulances were dispatched to the scene, according to Pradeep Jena, the state’s chief secretary.
Preliminary information suggests that one passenger train derailed and was subsequently struck by another train on the adjacent track. The trains involved were identified as the Coromandel Express and the Howrah Superfast Express, according to Indian Railways.
Mr. Jena informed AFP news agency that the death toll stands at around 50 people, with over 500 individuals injured. The primary focus is now on rescuing passengers and providing necessary medical assistance to the injured victims.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his distress over the incident, offering his condolences to the bereaved families via a tweet. He stated that rescue operations were underway, with all possible assistance being provided to those affected.
Home Minister Amit Shah also expressed his deep anguish over the tragedy.

Reports indicate that several carriages of the Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express derailed, causing some of them to end up on the opposite track around 19:00 local time (13:30 GMT). Subsequently, the Howrah Superfast Express, traveling from Yesvantpur to Howrah, collided with the overturned carriages.
Witnesses observed surviving passengers rushing to aid those trapped in the wreckage. Rescue efforts are expected to continue throughout the night.
Rail accidents are unfortunately relatively common in India, with several hundred incidents occurring each year, according to the Associated Press news agency.
