A popular Welsh mountain cafe known for its iconic status among hikers has reopened its doors in Eryri, sparking a dispute over its name. Caffi Moel Siabod, located in Capel Curig near Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) and other peaks in Eryri National Park, had closed earlier this year when the previous operators moved to a new venture in Pentrefelin near Criccieth. The cafe was recently relaunched by Nadeem Abbasi, owner of several Londis stores and Abbasi’s restaurant in Betws-y-Coed. However, a controversy arose when Abbasi named the establishment Caffi Siabod, citing its location under Moel Siabod mountain, prompting discontent from the former operators. Their new site, The Siabod at the Eisteddfa Fisheries, led to tensions over the use of the Siabod name.
Despite the disagreements, Abbasi expressed his commitment to collaborating with the community to establish a welcoming space at the cafe. The naming dispute has generated discussions on social media, with differing opinions on the matter. While acknowledging the former operators’ concerns, Abbasi emphasised his intention to engage positively with the local community. He outlined plans to expand the cafe’s services beyond food and beverages to include a store, mobile library, and post office, with potential evening offerings in the future. To support his vision, Abbasi has recruited a team of three members and plans to grow the staff to approximately 12 members by next spring.
Addressing the naming debate, Abbasi maintained that the cafe’s proximity to Moel Siabod justified the name choice and underscored his desire to collaborate rather than engage in conflicts. The former operators clarified their position, asserting their separate identity and expressing hope for both businesses’ success. The decision has evoked mixed reactions online, with some supporting the new cafe’s venture while others express reservations. Despite the discord, Abbasi remains focused on integrating the cafe into the community and providing a valuable social hub for locals and visitors alike. The reopening of this beloved establishment symbolises a new chapter in its storied legacy, inviting patrons to enjoy a refreshed experience in the picturesque Welsh mountains.
