I recently had the pleasure of visiting Tenby, renowned as Wales’ most famous seaside town, for the very first time. Arriving there, I found myself utterly enchanted by its blend of beauty and history, making it a truly magical destination. My interest in medieval and ancient history had drawn me to this charming town, with its four stunning beaches, picturesque hilltop views, pastel-coloured buildings, and intact medieval city walls. The desire to explore Tenby had been on my mind for over two years, and as luck would have it, a sunny weekend coincided with my visit on St David’s Day earlier this month, prompting me to book a ticket without hesitation.
Upon stepping off the train and entering the town, the array of vibrant pastel-coloured houses immediately set a delightful tone for my visit. As I strolled along the High Street, the real magic of Tenby began to unfold before my eyes. The view of North Beach from the High Street was nothing short of breathtaking, and the prospect of exploring the entire town filled me with joy and excitement. My initial plan was to first visit Castle Beach and St Catherine’s Island, with their intriguing historical features. St Catherine’s Island, accessible from Castle Beach during low tide, offered mesmerising views from its vantage point atop a Napoleonic fortress, which had also served as a zoo at different periods. The £5 entry fee was a small price to pay for such a memorable experience.
Following my exploration of the island and its fortress, I proceeded to visit Tenby Museum and Art Gallery, a true gem for history enthusiasts like myself. Established in 1878, the museum not only showcased fascinating artefacts but also honoured the lifeguards and writers who’ve made their mark on Tenby. A short walk from the museum took me to Castle Hill, providing a panoramic vista of the sea, beach, and town, with remnants of the castle and a statue of Prince Albert adding to the historical charm. It was at Castle Hill where the rich history of Tenby intersected with its natural beauty, offering a moment of tranquil reflection amidst the stunning surroundings.
After ticking off most of my planned itinerary, I took some time to leisurely explore the town, discovering an assortment of local shops, restaurants, and eateries to cater to every taste. The Old Town Market, in particular, stood out as a must-visit spot for those seeking a touch of historic ambiance. Tenby, with its seamless blend of beauty and historical significance, left a lasting impression on me, satisfying my passion for the past while granting me a sense of fulfillment through its sheer loveliness. As I left Tenby, I carried with me not just memories of its captivating history but also a newfound appreciation for its aesthetic appeal, making it a destination I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone seeking a truly magical experience.
