‘I was left with nightmares and too scared to eat after dental treatment went wrong’

A woman from Caerphilly, Tracey Dowling, has been awarded a £15,000 payout after experiencing alleged inappropriate dental treatment that left her traumatized. Seeking veneer treatment at mydentist to enhance her smile, Dowling found herself facing nightmares and paranoia instead. Initially pleased with the six veneers she had installed, Dowling soon faced multiple instances of veneers falling off, leading to concerns about the treatment’s suitability.

After seeking advice from an independent specialist, Dowling discovered that veneers were not the appropriate solution for her dental history. The subsequent restorative treatment cost her nearly £20,000, forcing her to dip into funds from her late mother’s house to cover the expenses. The ordeal, which lasted months and involved hours of dental chair time, took a toll on Dowling emotionally, causing her to lose weight and suffer from nightmares about her teeth falling out.

Following an investigation by the Dental Law Partnership, it was revealed that Dowling should not have been offered veneers initially due to her dental background. The firm asserted that alternative treatments could have prevented the subsequent issues and extensive remedial work. The case was settled in July 2024 with Dowling receiving £15,000 in an out-of-court settlement, although the dentist did not admit liability.

In response to the incident, a spokesperson from mydentist acknowledged that the care provided to Dowling fell below expectations. They emphasised their commitment to delivering high-quality dental care and expressed regret that Dowling’s experience did not meet their standards. Dowling’s story serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of thorough evaluation and personalised treatment plans in dental care.

The challenges faced by Tracey Dowling highlight the impact of inadequate dental treatment on individuals’ physical and emotional well-being. The case underscores the significance of appropriate assessment and treatment planning in ensuring positive outcomes for dental patients. Dowling’s determination to seek justice and share her experience serves as a reminder of the importance of transparency and accountability in healthcare practices.
