‘I used to take care of cancer patients, then my wife got the disease’

NHS worker Eirian Evans has dedicated over two decades of his life to caring for cancer patients during their most challenging times. However, his life took a heartbreaking turn when his wife, Rachel, was diagnosed with incurable metastatic breast cancer in the liver after previously beating breast cancer in 2019. Eirian, 45, who works as an advanced nurse practitioner at Neath Port Talbot Hospital, now finds himself providing the same level of care and support to his wife, alongside looking after their two teenage daughters.

Eirian shared his feelings of anxiety and fear when realizing he would need to care for his wife, despite his years of experience in healthcare. He mentioned that while caring for patients professionally prepared him for what to expect, caring for a loved one brings a different level of difficulty and emotional strain. Despite the challenges, Eirian remains dedicated to ensuring his wife’s well-being, doing everything possible to make her journey easier.

As an unpaid carer, Eirian represents the countless individuals across Swansea Bay who selflessly care for their loved ones. His commitment to his role as a carer, both in a personal and professional capacity, was recognised when he was named Wales’s Carer of the Year at the Nation Radio Pride of Wales Awards, nominated by staff at Maggie’s cancer centre in Swansea. Eirian expressed his gratitude for the support received from Maggie’s, which has helped him navigate various aspects of caring for Rachel, including practical and emotional assistance.

Acknowledging the importance of seeking help, Eirian encourages other carers to explore the resources available to them, stressing that there are organisations willing to offer support and guidance. While initially hesitant to ask for help himself, Eirian highlights the valuable assistance provided by organisations like the Swansea Carers Centre, Neath Port Talbot Carers Service, and Maggie’s, which offer a range of services from welfare benefit advice to counselling.

Eirian’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the unwavering dedication and selflessness of carers, who play a crucial role in the health and social care system. As he continues to balance his professional responsibilities with caring for his wife and daughters, Eirian’s story highlights the challenges faced by many individuals in similar roles and the importance of seeking support and assistance when needed.
