A woman from Newport, Sophie Shuttleworth, shared her harrowing experience of losing the use of her legs after contracting meningitis. Sophie initially dismissed her symptoms as sunstroke or a hangover following an arts festival. However, her condition rapidly deteriorated, leading to her being placed in an induced coma for three weeks. Upon waking up, Sophie found herself unable to move and was paralyzed from the waist down due to the effects of the meningitis infection.
Sophie highlighted the importance of recognising the symptoms of bacterial meningitis, such as high temperature, severe headache, stiffness in the neck, and sensitivity to light. After her discharge, Sophie faced various challenges as a new wheelchair user, including inadequate accessibility and the lack of necessary equipment like a standing frame, which is vital for bone density and preventing injuries from falls.
Despite these difficulties, Sophie found hope and support through technology. She started using a high-tech exoskeleton called ExoMotus at a rehabilitation clinic in Newport. This powered exoskeleton helps individuals with lower limb impairments to stand and walk, aiding in muscle movement and overall independence. Thanks to the ExoMotus, Sophie has regained some mobility and improved her health, bone density, and circulation.
However, access to such advanced technology comes at a cost, prompting fundraising efforts to support others in need.
