A gynaecologist initially attributing her back pain to the physical demands of her job later discovered she had cancer, as reported by Wales Online. Ellissa Baskind, a consultant gynaecologist, associated her worsening back pain with the numerous surgeries she performed until it began affecting her daily life, notably during a work Christmas party five years ago where she couldn’t fully participate due to the pain. Despite a clear x-ray, abnormal blood test results led to a shocking diagnosis of leukaemia. Ellissa, living in Leeds, expressed disbelief at the diagnosis, having only experienced back pain between her shoulder blades as a symptom.
Following an unsuccessful round of chemotherapy, Ellissa underwent an urgent stem cell transplant before encountering a lump in her breast 18 months later, leading to a diagnosis of myeloid sarcoma, a rare cancerous tumour type. Despite initial concerns that it was incurable, Ellissa underwent another successful stem cell transplant in 2022, along with additional rounds of chemotherapy, leading to improved health. Reflecting on her journey, Ellissa emphasised the importance of listening to one’s body, seeking medical attention, and persevering through challenges.
