Sleeping Rough for a Night at the Swans Big Sleepout Event Shows the Realities of Homelessness
Shaurya Shaurya had the opportunity to experience a glimpse of homelessness by participating in the Swans Big Sleepout event at the Swansea.com stadium. While the event did not replicate the true hardships of rough sleeping, it shed light on the brutal realities faced by thousands of homeless individuals across the UK. Shaurya’s personal encounter with temporary homelessness earlier in the year, when a landlord rendered him homeless, provided him with a deeper appreciation for the basic necessities many take for granted every day.
Hosted by the Swansea City AFC Foundation and Matthew’s House, the Swans Big Sleepout aimed to raise awareness about the challenges of homelessness. The event brought together 84 participants, including Shaurya, who spent a cold night under the open sky. Project manager Thom Lynch from Matthew’s House highlighted that the event was not a true reflection of homelessness but served as a platform to educate individuals about the struggles faced by those without shelter for prolonged periods.
Participating in the event gave Shaurya a newfound appreciation for the support systems that cushioned his one-night experience, such as security personnel and immediate access to medical assistance. He acknowledged the stark difference between his temporary outdoor stay with these amenities and the stark reality of rough sleepers, who battle isolation, insecurity, and adverse weather conditions without any safety net.
Despite being provided with warm food and drinks, Shaurya found it challenging to get comfortable on the hard ground outside the stadium. The experience of struggling to fall asleep and enduring the cold night made him realise the privilege of having a warm bed and home to return to the next morning. Conversing with fellow participants throughout the night provided a sense of companionship and solidarity, reinforcing the idea that no one should face homelessness alone.
Thom Lynch emphasised that homelessness is indiscriminate and can affect anyone, regardless of background or circumstances. The psychological toll of prolonged homelessness, including boredom, isolation, and anxiety, can exacerbate an individual’s already challenging situation. Matthew’s House aims to provide a support system for those experiencing homelessness, offering a lifeline to help individuals navigate their way back to stable accommodation.
As Shaurya reflected on his brief encounter with outdoor sleeping and the subsequent comfort of returning home, he expressed gratitude for the safety and security of having a roof over his head. The Swans Big Sleepout event raised over £24,700, with funds being split between Swansea City AFC Foundation and Matthew’s House to support their ongoing efforts in tackling homelessness. Shaurya’s personal journey underscored the importance of empathy and understanding towards those facing the daily struggle of homelessness.
The event served as a poignant reminder that homelessness is not just about physical survival but also about the emotional and mental wellbeing of individuals experiencing such hardships. By immersing himself in a simulated homeless experience, Shaurya gained valuable insights and vowed to advocate for greater support and resources for homeless individuals in the community. The Swans Big Sleepout event not only raised funds but also raised awareness about the critical need to address homelessness with compassion and effective solutions.
As Shaurya concluded his account of the event, he highlighted the stark contrast between his temporary discomfort and the harsh reality faced by those enduring homelessness on a long-term basis. His experience at the Swans Big Sleepout left an indelible impression, reinforcing the importance of collective action in combating homelessness and providing vital support to those in need. Through personal narratives like Shaurya’s, the conversation around homelessness can be further amplified, driving positive change and creating a more inclusive and supportive society.
