I spent £150 a day on drugs before one thing changed my life

A transformative journey began for Stephen Melling when he spent £150 daily on drugs, overwhelmed by addiction and despair until a pivotal moment changed his life. The 45-year-old father-of-four from Liverpool found himself at rock bottom, writing suicide notes and battling a cocaine and alcohol addiction that consumed him. However, in a moment of clarity, Stephen did something he had never attempted before, running a single lap around a car park. This simple act marked the beginning of his remarkable recovery journey.

Reflecting on his struggles, Stephen shared that for decades, he grappled with mental health challenges and addiction, exacerbated by the loss of his uncle to suicide when he was just nine years old. The pain of this loss haunted him through his teenage years and into adulthood, leading to a destructive path of substance abuse and unhealthy coping mechanisms. Despite numerous suicide attempts, the breakdown of his marriage, and estrangement from his children, Stephen persevered through his darkest moments.

Seeking help, Stephen found himself at Broadoak, a mental health unit, where he took the courageous step of asking for support. Following a week of treatment, he relapsed into his addiction, unable to navigate the challenges of everyday life. The turning point came when, after a night in police custody, Stephen began running. This newfound passion for running evolved into Recovery Runners, a support group he founded to help others facing similar struggles.

Today, on his 45th birthday, Stephen embarks on a monumental 110-mile run across the country to raise funds for the community interest company he leads. Through running, Stephen found solace, clarity, and a renewed sense of purpose, shedding weight and gaining mental strength along the way. His journey serves as a beacon of hope for those battling addiction and mental health issues, demonstrating the transformative power of determination and resilience.

As Stephen’s story continues to inspire, he emphasises the importance of reaching out for help and breaking the cycle of addiction and despair. His remarkable journey underscores the significance of community support and the impact of small steps towards recovery. Stephen’s story is a testament to the strength found in facing challenges head-on and the power of perseverance in overcoming adversity.
