‘I lost parents in tsunami – now infection means I can’t have children’

A man who lost his parents in the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami has shared how, 20 years later, he has been left infertile due to contracting sepsis, meaning he can’t carry on his parents’ DNA. Robert Forkan, 37, survived the devastating tsunami with his brother Paul, while their parents Kevin and Sandra tragically passed away after saving their younger siblings. Following their parents’ deaths, the siblings were adopted by their sister Marie and have since dedicated themselves to honouring their parents’ memory by building orphanages and schools in Sri Lanka and neighbouring countries.

After years of selfless work, Robert and his wife, Roisin, had planned to start a family, but their hopes were shattered when Robert was diagnosed with urological sepsis in October 2023. Despite undergoing surgeries and treatments for the condition, the sepsis spread to his testicles, resulting in one being removed and leaving him infertile. Robert, who co-founded a company specialising in workplace health, expressed his frustration at not being able to continue his family line, especially as the 20th anniversary of the tsunami approached. Reflecting on his journey, he highlighted the resilience and strength needed to overcome such adversity.

Robert’s parents had embarked on a worldwide adventure with their children, seeking a break from the monotony of daily life. However, tragedy struck when the tsunami hit Sri Lanka, leaving Robert and Paul orphaned. In the aftermath, the siblings relied on each other for support and eventually found their way back to England, where they were taken in by their elder sister. Despite the hardships they faced, Robert and Paul went on to establish charitable initiatives, including orphanages and children’s camps, as a way of giving back.

In September 2023, Robert and Roisin started a workplace health MOT company, combining Roisin’s medical expertise with Robert’s resilience and experience. Their plans for a family were put on hold by Robert’s sepsis diagnosis, which not only affected his physical health but also impacted their dreams of parenthood. Despite the challenges, the couple remains hopeful for the future, considering various fertility options and potential relocations.

Robert’s battle with post-sepsis syndrome has brought about cognitive and physical challenges, forcing him to adapt to a new normal. His determination to raise awareness about sepsis and support others going through similar struggles remains unwavering. While the road ahead may be uncertain, Robert and Roisin are focused on building a positive future, both personally and professionally. Their story serves as a testament to resilience, hope, and the power of perseverance in the face of adversity.
