Teenage Gym Instructor Overcomes Amputation to Pursue Dreams
Oliver Liddle, a 19-year-old gym instructor from Whitley Bay, North Tyneside, has defied the odds and embraced a positive outlook on life after having his leg amputated due to bone cancer following a rugby injury at the age of 12. Oliver, who lost his mother to breast cancer at a young age, faced his first battle with cancer when he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in his right leg after a routine tackle on the rugby field. Despite the challenges he has faced, Oliver has become an inspiration to many as he continues to excel in the world of sports and fitness.
Oliver’s journey began when he noticed persistent pain and a lump forming on his knee after a rugby tackle at the age of 12. Following a series of tests and a biopsy, he was diagnosed with aggressive bone cancer. Given the options of reconstructive surgery that would stunt his growth or amputation to save his life, Oliver bravely chose the latter. At just 13 years old, he underwent an above-the-knee amputation and embarked on a rigorous nine-month chemotherapy treatment.
After conquering cancer, Oliver’s resilience and determination shone through as he focused on rebuilding his strength and pursuing his passion for sports. He dedicated himself to training at the gym, where he eventually excelled in Para Powerlifting competitions, winning gold at the British Championships and bronze at the World Championships. Oliver’s success in sports inspired him to become a qualified gym instructor and launch his own fitness business, Unlimbited, in 2023, aimed at mentoring young amputees returning to sports.
Reflecting on his journey, Oliver remains positive and determined to make the most of life’s challenges. He shares, “Never give up, that’s something I’ve always told myself no matter how hard it gets. No matter what life throws at you, stay positive, stay determined and don’t let it get you down too much.” Oliver’s motivation stems from his late mother, whom he honours through his achievements and perseverance in the face of adversity.
Despite the hurdles he has overcome, Oliver continues to inspire others with his story of resilience and triumph. His dedication to helping fellow amputees through fitness coaching and mentoring is a testament to his compassionate spirit and unwavering determination. Oliver’s journey serves as a beacon of hope for anyone facing challenges, demonstrating that with perseverance and a positive mindset, anything is possible.
Oliver’s transformation from a cancer survivor to a thriving gym instructor and athlete is a testament to his remarkable strength and courage. Through his fitness business, Unlimbited, he has extended a helping hand to those navigating similar obstacles, providing support and guidance to help them achieve their fitness goals. Oliver’s story is a reminder that no obstacle is insurmountable with the right attitude and determination, inspiring others to embrace challenges head-on and pursue their dreams relentlessly.
