I didn’t realise I was dying until may parents were summoned to my bedside by the doctors

A young diver, Lydia Williamson-Price, aged 19, was unexpectedly struck down with life-threatening sepsis following complications from glandular fever, leading to a critical situation where her parents were urgently summoned to her hospital bedside. Lydia, a medal-winning diver from Penrhiwceiber, RCT, spent three challenging weeks at Prince Charles Hospital battling the illness. Initially, Lydia did not comprehend the severity of her condition when she first experienced symptoms of severe sickness, eventually leading her to seek medical attention at accident and emergency.

Reflecting on her ordeal, Lydia recollected, “I started feeling very ill at home. I was throwing up constantly for nearly a week. I went to Prince Charles Hospital A&E and sat there for three days on drips waiting for bed.” Lydia’s condition rapidly deteriorated, progressing into sepsis due to complications from glandular fever, causing her spleen to enlarge, liver function to decline, and fluid accumulation in her lungs. Amidst her critical state, Lydia was briefly unaware of the gravity of her situation, only coming to terms with it as she began to recover.

Lydia’s journey through illness also encompassed a previous diagnosis of scoliosis at the age of 15, forcing her to relinquish her beloved diving practice. Despite this setback, Lydia remained resolute, adapting by embracing roles in swimming and diving instruction at Sobell Leisure Centre in Aberdare. Subsequently, Lydia’s battle with sepsis earlier this year posed challenges as she prepared for exams at Coleg y Cymoedd, aspiring to pursue a career in midwifery at the University of South Wales.

Throughout her recovery, Lydia demonstrated remarkable resilience, acknowledging the transformative impact of her health crisis. Despite the setbacks caused by scoliosis and sepsis, Lydia remains determined to forge ahead with her studies and aspirations within the healthcare field, drawing on her personal experiences as a young carer and a patient to shape her future as a midwife. As she embarks on this new chapter, Lydia’s journey of overcoming adversity serves as a testament to her unwavering strength and determination.

Lydia’s story underscores the profound impact of facing life-threatening conditions at a young age, elucidating the importance of resilience, support, and a positive outlook in navigating challenging circumstances. Her extraordinary journey of survival and determination resonates as an inspiring narrative of courage in the face of adversity, highlighting the transformative power of perseverance and hope in overcoming life’s most formidable obstacles.
