The Welsh Government has announced plans to invest hundreds of millions of pounds in new trains, drivers, and crew to increase rail services on one Welsh rail network by 50%. The focus is on the north Wales mainline, with changes to four level crossings to allow for faster speeds and a 40% capacity increase. The investment includes £800m for new trains and recruiting additional staff. Additionally, a temporary footbridge will be installed at Pensarn, with potential for permanency, while two footpath crossings will close.
Network Rail and Transport for Wales are also considering permanently closing a footpath crossing in Deganwy. Welsh Transport Minister Ken Skates highlighted the collaborative effort between Network Rail, Transport for Wales, and both the UK and Welsh governments in achieving this milestone. Marie Daly, Chief Customer and Culture Officer at TfW, expressed optimism that these upgrades will enhance customer experience and connectivity for North Wales residents. Emma Osborn from Network Rail emphasised the commitment to safety and community interests in delivering these improvements.
The plans are subject to consultation to ensure community feedback is considered. The investment aims to modernise and expand rail services in Wales and the Borders, ultimately offering enhanced connectivity and increased service options for passengers in North Wales. The joint efforts of multiple stakeholders demonstrate a unified approach to improving rail infrastructure and service quality in the region.
