Royal Mint in Wales to Extract Hundreds of Kilos of Gold from E-Waste
The Royal Mint in Wales is set to recover 450kg of gold yearly, valued at £27m, from discarded electronic items like TVs and phones. A new factory has been built to process about 4,000 tonnes of printed circuit boards, aiming to preserve precious metals for future generations. The mint’s innovative approach uses a sustainable extraction process to combat e-waste globally and reduce reliance on traditional mining methods. The factory’s efficient method dissolves gold in just four minutes at low temperatures, using renewable energy sources. This initiative offers a more environmentally friendly solution to the increasing challenge of e-waste. Anne Jessopp, CEO of The Royal Mint, expressed pride in transforming the company for the future, creating new jobs, and safeguarding its legacy for over a millennium.
